Veterans’ Educational Benefits

American University’s degree and certificate programs are reviewed annually by DC’s State Approving Agency and the VA for VA Educational Benefits eligibility. These programs are approved for educational benefits under the various federal laws relating to veterans. While every effort has been made to provide accurate and up-to-date information, changes in federal regulations and university policy may occur at any time without notice. For the most accurate and up-to-date information please visit www.american.edu/veterans or email veterans@american.edu.

Certification of Enrollment to the Veterans Administration

After registering for classes, new, continuing, or transfer students who intend to use their VA educational benefits must submit an online Request for Certification of Enrollment for VA Benefits form every semester and submit it to AU Central - Veteran Services.

Enrollment will be certified with the Department of Veterans Administration (VA) after AU Central - Veteran Services has received the request. To fill out the Certification Request form, go to www.american.edu/veterans, select applications and information, then select Request for Certification.

Students who are entitled to educational assistance under Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment) or Chapter 33 (Post-9/11) GI Bill Benefits must submit the following:

  • Certificate of eligibility or a Statement of Benefits from the VA website - eBenefits (must be submitted once)
  • Request for Certification via AU’s website (this must be completed each semester or term)
  • An approved Purchase Order from Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31 only/submitted each semester or term)

If these steps have been taken, AU will not impose any penalty including finance charges and will not deny access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities while waiting for educational benefits to be processed by the VA and sent to AU. Students will not be required to borrow additional funds in the interim of a delayed disbursement of VA funding from Chapter 31 or Chapter 33.

Any balance due after the start of classes that is not covered by Chapter 31 or Chapter 33, VA funding will be subject to monthly finance charges of .05% of the balance due and an account balance stop.

Important Academic Regulations for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students using any Chapter VA Educational benefit who fail to meet the conditions of their probation outlined in Regulation 5.7  of the Undergraduate Regulations will not be eligible to continue to use VA Education Benefits in future semesters and may be dismissed.

For further information on the administration of veterans’ educational benefits, inquiries may be emailed to veterans@american.edu or by visiting the Veterans Services team in AU Central, 201 Asbury Building.
