Explores African American contributions to uniquely American forms and institutions in the performing arts. The course examines the artistic and cultural implications of these forms-from minstrelsy, vaudeville, and tap dance to jazz, blues, and gospel-set against the societal phenomena that shaped them, as well as the influence of African Americans on the broad range of performing arts genres, including musical theatre, drama, comedy, dance, and film.
