How do humans use language and how does language shape our experiences in and of the world? This course explores language as a social, cultural, political, and economic phenomenon using case studies from around the world, including spoken languages, sign languages, and even texting. The course examines attitudes about the speakers of different languages and how these attitudes reinforce or challenge stereotypes and inequalities related to race, ethnicity, gender, class, age, and nationality.
