APDS-200 Modern East Asia (3)

This course examines modern East Asia during the critical period from the mid nineteenth century to the present. Western colonialism arrived on a wholesale scale in the region while various East Asian empires also consolidated and sought to subordinate neighboring nations. The resultant conflicts, as well as gender, ethnic, and class tensions created major changes in East Asian societies, even while important continuities in the workings of power persisted.
