Introductory survey of the protists (with emphasis on bacteria): their morphology, physiology, metabolism, growth, and destruction, and their role in human welfare as agents of disease and environmental change. Laboratory techniques of staining, cultivation, isolation, and identification of microbes, with emphasis on bacteria. Experiments on physiology, metabolism, and physical-chemical effects on growth and death of microbes. Usually offered alternate springs. Prerequisite: BIO-300  and CHEM-310 .
