Examines the central role digital media technologies play in culture and society. Presents historical and contemporary theories about how digital media provide the structures in which individual identity is formed, social relations manifest, political discourse occurs, and economic power flows. Includes restrictions on media freedom, privacy, and surveillance online. Usually offered every term. Prerequisite: SOC major or minor, and minimum 2.5 GPA.
