SPAN-560 Latin American Caudillos, Caciques, and Dictators (3)

This course examines three key figures in the political and cultural structures of power in Latin America: the caudillo, the cacique, and the dictator. Through readings of short stories and novels informed by historical contexts and culture studies theory, students gain an understanding of the genesis of these figures and the influence they still bear on the power structures of present-day Latin America. Prerequisite: upper-level Spanish course.
