Honors in History


Available through the Department of History , College of Arts and Sciences , the Honors in History program deepens the major experience of the department’s very best students. 

Admission to the Program


Students should apply for admission no later than the second semester of their junior year. 

Students seeking admission must have a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA and a minimum 3.67 major GPA. Students seeking admission must provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member; a student-written statement describing qualifications for inclusion in the Honors in History program and discussing the student’s academic background, areas of historical interest, and professional goals; and a copy of the student’s transcript. 

Program Requirements


  • 9 credit hours of Honors in History coursework
  • Foreign language study: complete two semesters at the college level or pass a department-administered proficiency examination
  • Portfolio with public presentation
  • Minimum 3.67 major GPA in History (BA)  

Course Requirements


Honors in History (3 credit hours)


Complete 3 credit hours from the following, or other coursework at or above 200-level with honors supplement:

Senior Thesis (6 credit hours)


Complete 6 credit hours from the following, with grades of A- or better:
