American University (AU) is a student-centered research institution driven to make a difference. AU distinguishes itself through rigorous academics, a strategic location in Washington, DC, and its changemaking community that steps up, shows up, and says, “challenge accepted” to the issues that matter most to them and the world.

AU offers 74 bachelor’s programs, 82 master’s programs, and 11 doctoral programs (exclusive of the Washington College of Law’s (WCL) JD, LLM, MLS, and SJD programs), through its nine major divisions: College of Arts and Sciences ; Washington College of Law Kogod School of Business School of Communication School of Education School of International Service School of Public Affairs Office of Global & Immersive Studies ; and Office of Graduate & Professional Studies .

Bachelor’s programs are typically completed in four years. Undergraduate students choose personalized and multidisciplinary curriculum that focuses on experiential learning, theoretical study, and twenty-first century skill building taught by faculty that includes renowned experts, scholars, and researchers in public affairs, law, history, economics, business, international relations, education, science, communication, and the arts. In addition to more than 800 full-time faculty members, AU draws adjunct faculty from Washington, DC’s professional community including policy makers, diplomats, journalists, artists, writers, scientists, and business leaders. With a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio and average class size of 21 (undergraduate) and 20 (graduate and law), students benefit from personalized attention and one-on-one mentorships as they develop deep connections with these thought leaders, award-winning scholars, and committed teachers.

The AU community of diverse thought, origins, interests, and talents is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion that drives continuous progress through inclusive policies and transformative outcomes with learning and scholarship that contributes to society and addresses racism in its many forms. The student body of more than 13,000 reflects the university’s global perspective with representatives from 110 countries and 49 states as well as DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

As innovative as the community that calls it home, AU’s carbon-neutral campus (an 84-acre accredited arboretum) includes the new Hall of Science and Don Myers Technology Center among its 11 LEED-certified buildings, university library, administrative and academic buildings, 10 residence halls, an interdenominational religious center, a sports center, and a museum. Facilities encompass 24-hour computer laboratories, radio and TV studios, science laboratories, makerspaces, art studios, recital halls, and a theatre. WCL is located on the Tenley Campus less than one mile from main campus.
