Departments and Centers
The Kogod School of Business is made up of five departments: Accounting and Taxation, Finance and Real Estate, Information Technology and Analytics, Management, and Marketing. The Accounting and Taxation Department oversees the instruction of all courses pertaining to accounting, taxation, and business law. The Department of Finance and Real Estate provides courses in finance, financial institutions, managerial economics, and real estate. The Department of Information Technology and Analytics provides instruction in information technology and analytics, with particular emphasis on the global dimensions of technology, as well as operations management, cybersecurity, big data, statistics, strategies for information technology development and use, and management of information technology resources. The Management Department provides instruction in the areas of human resources, organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, strategy, business and entertainment, corporate ethics, sustainability management, and global business citizenship. The Department of Marketing teaches courses in consumer behavior, research, advertising and promotion, service marketing, marketing strategy development, race in the marketplace, and technology-based marketing.
The Kogod Tax Policy Center promotes independent research and expands knowledge with respect to tax policy, tax planning and tax compliance for small businesses and entrepreneurs. The Center focuses on key problems with the nation’s tax laws that can create burdens and inequities for these taxpayers; develops and analyzes proposed solutions; and promotes dialogue that aims to inform policymakers, the public, the press, and tax practitioners about a range of complex tax issues impacting small businesses. The Tax Center’s leadership staff, including the Executive Director and the Managing Director, regularly testify before Congress and advise Congressional staff on small business tax matters.
The AU Center for Innovation (AUCI) brings together prospective student entrepreneurs, educators, and experienced entrepreneurs to develop and refine business models and to launch new ventures. Through experiential learning inside and outside the classroom, AU entrepreneurship students develop entrepreneurial mindsets, undertake marketing research, acquire financial resources, manage cash flows and grow their ventures. The mission of the research component of AUCI is to provide impactful research and thoughtful leadership in the areas of entrepreneurship theory, practice and pedagogy.
The Kogod Cybersecurity Governance Center (KCGC) at American University aims to promote responsible cybersecurity governance by providing organizational leaders and their designees with thoughtful, practical and well-supported guidance on the cybersecurity issues that are essential to their core stakeholder responsibilities. The Kogod School of Business at American University’s location in Washington, DC, puts the Center in a unique position to access, integrate, synthesize and report on leading edge research and practice in both the private and public sector.
The Business in the Capital Center conducts research and accelerates collaboration around the important issues facing the City and the Capital region. The Center convenes business, civic, and political leaders to implement policy, regulatory, and economic actions for all stakeholders.
The Kogod Blockchain Hub is a collaborative education and research-based initiative focused on the impact of blockchain technology on business processes. The Hub unifies stakeholders from the public and private sectors to create knowledge and guide hands-on applications of this emerging technology.
Office of Career Engagement
Given the unique career and professional development needs of business students, American University’s Kogod School of Business has invested in a dedicated business career center. The Office of Career Engagement empowers Kogod students and alumni to build meaningful relationships and careers via industry-specific coaching, employer engagement, and tailored resources. Services are organized around the following pathways: accounting & taxation, analytics & information technology, consulting, entertainment, finance & real estate, management & innovation, marketing, and sustainability management so that students can easily identify and access the opportunities and resources to support them toward their goals.
The expert staff partners with students to leverage their strengths, identify career goals, and create a personalized strategy for success. They provide complete support including career exploration, resume and cover letter prep, LinkedIn & networking guidance, mock interviews job search and negotiation, and more. In addition to sourcing job and internship opportunities, the team hosts recruitment events and networking opportunities to connect students with employers. These include on-campus opportunities such as industry-specific fairs, employer panels, and information sessions, as well as geographically-focused treks and employer site visits.
The office also maintains a cutting-edge technology suite includes assessments, a personalized job and internship platform, AI-powered feedback on resumes, LinkedIn, and interviewing skills, case interview prep, Kogod-specific templates and guides, and more. Center for Professionalism and Communications
No matter the industry, effective professionalism business communication skills are critical for the career readiness and life preparation of all Kogod graduates. In addition to communicating clearly through both written and verbal channels, students need to collaborate as responsible team players, develop their leadership confidence, and distinguish themselves as critical problem-solvers. To support student development in these necessary competencies, the Kogod School of Business runs a dedicated academic support center to instruct, support, and inspire students as they practice and hone these skills.
The Center for Professionalism and Communications equips Kogod students with the real-world communication and professionalism skills they need for career success and advancement. The Center’s trained peer consultants provide face-to-face or virtual tutoring on any written classroom assignment or project and will coach the delivery, content, and research of any team presentation. The Center’s directors deliver tailored instruction as guest lecturers in Kogod courses, set up tutoring check-ins throughout the semester as students work towards project deadlines, and run workshops focused on collaboration, active listening, and storytelling. The Center also provides students the opportunity to earn micro-credentials signifying to employers that they have demonstrated professionalism skills including communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Because the Center offers extensive online content via Canvas, students can access professionalism and communication resources seven days a week, at any hour. Online content includes writing and presentation videos, tip sheets, links to make an appointment, access to LinkedIn Learning resources as well as a comprehensive Style Guide for success in every assignment they encounter throughout their undergraduate or graduate coursework at Kogod. Students can also upload draft assignments for review within 24-hours of an appointment slot to receive robust, asynchronous feedback from a trained business tutor.
Kogod Student Development
At Kogod, the belief is that education should extend beyond the classroom to include experiential learning that enhances students’ intellectual development, leadership ability, communication skills, and professional self-confidence. To that end, activities that allow undergraduates and graduates to learn valuable skills in real world settings are developed and supported. Kogod hosts several opportunities for students to build their skills. Examples include:
The Case Competition is the annual signature event hosted by the Kogod School of Business for all graduate and undergraduate students. Case competitions are an excellent opportunity for students to sharpen their communication skills, case analysis, presentation style, and problem-solving techniques. Students work in teams to analyze a business case and present their findings to area business leaders and alumni who serve as judges.
The Annual Leadership Retreat provides Kogod students with meaningful opportunities to work on teams to creatively problem solve and have fun. By participating in teambuilding activities at a local ropes course, students have the opportunity to get to know each other and grow their leadership and collaboration skills.
International Student Development recognizes international students’ unique needs and works to support them through their academic and cultural transitions. We believe in diversity and inclusion, which is a value that helps foster appreciation and acceptance for all in our community. This is at the heart of our work, allowing us to offer programs that both support and welcome our international students.
The Educational Enhancement Fund provides Kogod students with the opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities, including business-focused professional conferences or association memberships, case or other competitions, and leadership development activities.
Global Learning Programs
One of Kogod’s core philosophies is that students who have spent time in diverse locations are better prepared to manage and communicate in cross-cultural settings and compete in a global environment. To complete this critical piece of their business education, students can choose from programs of various lengths in more than 100 locations worldwide, including over 30 accredited business programs in nearly 20 countries.
Kogod undergraduate students can pursue a range of global learning opportunities, including semester, summer or year-long study abroad programs, intern abroad programs, and intensive short-term courses focused on a specific economy or region of the world. While abroad, students can earn core or elective credits toward their degree requirements.
Kogod graduate students can choose from several short-term immersive programs, offered in major European business centers as well as emerging economies. Kogod also offers semester abroad opportunities for graduate students. Sustainability Management (MS) students participate in an integrated international experience, and all students enrolled in the Business Administration (MBA) [Full-Time] complete a Global Consulting project.
Business Honorary Society
Kogod recognizes the academic, professional, and personal achievement of enrolled students through membership in Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS). BGS is the highest academic recognition for the top 10% of sophomores, juniors, and seniors and the top 20% of graduate students. Eligible students are invited to become members each spring.
Kogod Honors
The Kogod Honors program is designed for our most talented and ambitious students who desire to use business as a force for meaningful change. Students in the program take Honors designated courses from a selection of our required core courses. These sections have substantively more depth and are designed to develop a professional mindset, creative problem solving, and analytical thinking. Additionally, Honors students participate in extracurricular programming that helps them enhance their leadership, communication, and networking skills.
