This course explores the experiences of Africans under European colonialism (1880s-1960s) and the legacy of colonialism for contemporary Africa. Topics include colonial policies and African responses; constructions of race, gender, and class; African nationalism and independence; and the social, economic, and political challenges of post-colonial Africa.
