REAL-736 Urban Planning and Sustainability (3) This interactive course provides the basics for reading design and construction drawings and teaches the skills necessary for understanding current thoughts about urban planning in a sustainable environment. Students learn the economic, social, and political components critical to urban planning. Good urban planning concepts, including the demands of the real estate market, are discussed. Students become familiar with the greening of building codes and zoning requirements both locally and nationally. An overview of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is discussed with emphasis on LEED-Neighborhood Development, including smart location, neighborhood pattern and design, and green infrastructure. Students research and visit on-going sustainable real estate projects in the Washington, DC metropolitan region.
