NEUR-459 Molecular Neurobiology (3)

Synapses between neurons are the smallest functional unit of the nervous system, and as such can be considered the building blocks from which all sensation and behavior arise. Molecular Neurobiology is an in-depth exploration of the structure and function of synapses in vertebrate organisms. The course follows a bottom-up approach to exploring the subject, with detailed examination of how the neuronal membrane potential and release of neurotransmitters is controlled & modulated; how variation in synaptic organization leads to functional diversity across synapse types; and how circuits with emergent properties are assembled from multiple synaptic connections. Crosslist: BIO-459 , BIO-659 , and NEUR-659 . Prerequisite: BIO-320  or NEUR-220 .
