ARTH-336 African-American Art: Slavery to Social Justice (3)


This course examines how and why black artists in the United States have used painting, sculpture, photography, print, and mixed media to assert and question personal, racial, and national identity. Spanning the eighteenth century through the present, topics addressed include the politics of craft, photography, abstraction, and museum display. Through lectures, discussions, and assignments, students develop visual literacy as well as knowledge of the important role the visual arts and popular culture have played in black history. AU Core Integrative Requirement: Diversity and Equity. Grading: A-F only. Recommendation: ARTH-105  or ARTH-210 .
