Department Overview
The School of Education (SOE) offers programs that prepare students to become P-12 teachers, educational leaders at every level, and researchers for careers in early childhood settings, schools, colleges and universities, government agencies, and community and professional organizations in the U.S. and abroad. The academic programs take advantage of the dynamic location in DC to connect students with professionals in a large array of organizations that complement their programs of study. On-line and on-the-ground degree and certificate programs can be completed on a full or part-time basis with hands-one experience gained through internships, practica, community service, and related research work. SOE is home to the Institute for Innovation in Education, which works with SOE faculty and affiliated researchers to develop programs and projects in schools and communities dedicated to educational equity through increasing educational opportunity and access.
The SOE faculty and programs derive from the school’s mission: to create knowledge and prepare students to transform societies through education. The SOE enacts this mission through the following vision: SOE aims to be locally, nationally, and globally recognized for making a meaningful impact in the field of education through innovative teaching, research and service. This impact is achieved through rigorous scholarship; advocating for equitable and inclusive learning environments; advancing social justice; preparing effective educators; providing leadership in public-policy arenas; and collaborating with local, national, and global communities and organizations.
