Established in 1896, American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) holds the distinction of being the first law school in the United States founded by women. Rooted in a legacy of more than 125 years, since its founding, the AUWCL community is grounded in the values of equality, diversity, and intellectual rigor. With nationally and internationally acclaimed programs spanning clinical legal education, trial advocacy, international law, health law, and intellectual property and more, the law school’s dedicated faculty equip JD, LLM, MLS, and SJD students with the critical skills and values for immediate and impactful contributions in Washington, DC and around the world.

In 1949, Washington College of Law joined American University. A fully accredited institution, AUWCL is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and is approved by the American Bar Association. The school meets the requirements for preparation for the bar in all states and carries the certification of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, as well as the New York State Department of Education.

At the heart of the curriculum lies a commitment to imparting the methodology, practical skills, and foundational theories fundamental to the practice of law. The extensive array of traditional courses is complemented by immersive clinical and externship opportunities, simulation courses, and numerous specialized programs.
