The School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS) offers specialized educational programs at pre-collegiate, undergraduate, and post-baccalaureate levels, as well as graduate and professional training. The School offers degree credit, certificate, non-credit, as well as short-term continuing education opportunities for learners of all ages from high school graduates to working professionals. The School’s programs advance experiential learning, offer professional development opportunities, and promote intellectual growth aligned with market demands. Through a combination of classroom and workplace-based learning and immersive academic curricula, students gain new skills and ways of thinking for innovative learning, personal growth, and career redesign.

The School of Professional & Extended Studies hosts the American University Gap Program  for high school graduates; the Washington Mentorship Program  and its allied overseas programs in Bath, UK (Mentorship Program in England ) and Thessaloniki, Greece (Mentorship Program in Greece ); the Washington Semester Program  and the Washington Semester Summer Internship Program ; and the Graduate Professional Studies  Program. The School’s innovative, cross-disciplinary master’s degrees and credit-bearing and non-credit professional certificates advance technical knowledge in applied professional fields such as health care, human resources, instructional design, measurement and evaluation, sports, technology management, and leadership coaching. Graduate degrees are built around a core of professional skills that can translate across professions and subject areas.

The English Language & Training Academy (ELTA) and the roster of experts in intercultural management training in the School of Professional & Extended Studies support the needs of global and diverse workplaces. Through corporate, university and non-profit partnerships, the School also develops customized training programs to meet the specific needs of business, industry, organizations, and government agencies. The School boasts a faculty of scholar-teachers and leading practitioners as well as an extensive database of thousands of employers to support learners’ intellectual and career growth. The School’s Adult Career Coaching Center and internship advisors enlist technology and personalized advisement to support adult and traditional learners in advancing their professional development.
