International Accelerator Program (Undergraduate)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs

The undergraduate International Accelerator Program (IAP) is a non-degree academic pathway program that aims to improve English proficiency and academic readiness in preparation for degree-seeking admission to American University. The program is comprised of three distinct program tracks: The Extended Accelerator, the Academic Accelerator, and the Advanced Academic Accelerator. Students are placed in a program track based on English language proficiency level. IAP helps to ease the transition for international students to American University by combining credit-bearing academic courses from the first year of the degree with additional support, teaching, and cultural experiences. The Extended Accelerator Program is a four-term program during which students earn a minimum of 24 credit hours transferable to an undergraduate degree. The Academic and Advanced Academic Accelerator Program are three-term programs during which students earn a minimum of 24 credit hours transferable to an undergraduate degree.

IAP helps students strengthen critical academic reading, writing, and oral communication skills while fully immersing them in the U.S. academic culture. In addition to the IAP academic coursework, students receive support from a comprehensive advising program that includes individualized academic support plans and a first-year experience course taught by program advisors. Students in IAP have the opportunity to take coursework in undergraduate schools and departments across campus including the English Language and Training Academy (Undergraduate) , the School of Professional & Extended Studies , School of Communication , School of International Service  and the College of Arts and Sciences . Upon successful completion of the IAP curriculum and meeting progression requirements, IAP students may transfer to American University as degree-seeking students. IAP students are required to enroll in coursework each semester or term, including summer.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all required courses. All students must comply with minimum F1 visa course enrollment requirements while in the International Accelerator Program.
