The Master’s Accelerator Program (MAP) is a non-degree academic pathway program comprised of two distinct program tracks: MAP and Advanced MAP (AMAP). Students in Advanced MAP have up to two semesters to complete at least 2 credit-bearing courses transferable to a master’s degree at American University and other required coursework (defined below); most Advanced MAP students complete the program requirements in one semester. Students in MAP have up to three semesters to complete at least two 3 credit-bearing courses transferable to a master’s degree at American University and other required coursework (defined below); most MAP students complete the program requirements in two semesters. The Master’s Accelerator Program eases the transition into master’s level study at American University by combining credit-bearing academic courses with additional academic support, professional development instruction, and cultural experiences. Together, these features of the program combine to create a learning-centered environment that promotes academic and professional success, as well as active involvement in campus life.
Students in MAP may select from participating graduate programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences , Kogod School of Business , School of Communication , School of International Service , and the School of Public Affairs . MAP helps students strengthen their critical academic reading, writing, oral communication, and professional development while fully immersing them in the U.S. academic culture. Students in MAP take at leaset two academic courses (6 credit hours) in their school of interest, plus graduate English language coursework through the English Language and Training Academy (Graduate) (ELTA) and the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) department. Upon successful completion of the MAP curriculum and meeting progression requirements, MAP students transfer to the university as degree-seeking students. MAP students are not required to enroll in coursework in the summer term, but may be granted permission in consultation with MAP advising.
