American University Honors Program

Employing team-taught courses, creating living-learning communities, and working hands-on with DC institutions, the American University Honors Program enrolls students from all majors to learn advanced, 21st-century skills in research, communication, and innovation. This innovative program offers a new approach to liberal arts education by creating courses dedicated to integrative, problem-based learning. Interdisciplinary and team-taught, each of the four Honors Inquiry courses approaches a single issue from the different perspectives afforded by two professors who come from different academic disciplines. The Honors Inquiry course offerings change every three years as faculty tackle newly pressing issues. Students then apply their training in interdisciplinary problem solving through two research opportunities: a Challenge Course in which they form teams to pursue a collaborative project and a senior capstone, which can be completed in their major. The program admitted its first class in Fall 2014.

Admission to the Program

Interested incoming students must complete an application that includes several essays, and admission is based upon excellence in their high school academic performance, demonstrated potential for high performance as undergraduate students, and their fit with the program. Enrollment is highly selective; students receive a guaranteed $30,000 scholarship and may be eligible for financial aid. Students may only apply to AU Honors as incoming first-year students.
