Admission to the Program
Formal admission to the major requires a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale) and departmental approval. Major Requirements
- 56 credit hours with grades of C or better, including at least 22 credit hours at or above 300-level
Required (34 credit hours)
Statistics (4 credit hours)
Complete 4 credit hours from the following: Natural and Mathematical Sciences (6 credit hours)
Complete a two-course sequence from the following: Note: This requirement may be waived for students with more than one major in this department. Second Course
Complete 3 credit hours from the following: Mathematics
Complete 6 credit hours from the following:
Additional (12 credit hours)
- 12 additional credit hours of mathematics (MATH), statistics (STAT), or computer science (CSC) coursework with approval of the student’s advisor
Combined Applied Mathematics (BS) and Mathematics (MA)
American University offers students the opportunity to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees through its combined bachelor’s/master’s programs. In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for combined bachelor’s/master’s programs: - Students are encouraged to contact the Mathematics (MA) program director as early in their undergraduate study as possible.
- Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.20 in major coursework.
