History (MA)


Admission to the Program


In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for graduate study, applicants to the History concentration must earn a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (verbal, quantitative, and analytic). The GRE is not required for applicants to the Public History concentration. Admission is based on academic record, test scores, letters of recommendation from two professors with whom work was taken recently, personal statement, writing sample, and favorable judgment by the department graduate committee and chair.

Degree Requirements


  • 30-36 credit hours of approved graduate work:
    • History concentration (30 credit hours): 9 credit hours in core courses, 6 credit hours of research seminar or thesis, and 15 credit hours of approved electives
    • Public History concentration (36 credit hours): 9 credit hours in core courses, 3 credit hours of research seminar, 9 credit hours of public history requirements, and 15 credit hours of approved electives
  • Tool of research: a relevant foreign language, quantitative methods, oral history, history and new media, or a methodology approved by the graduate committee of the Department of History
  • Capstone Experience: one of the following as approved by the student’s advisor:
    • Comprehensive MA examination in one field (e.g. US I)
    • Comprehensive MA examination in combined field (e.g. US I/US II)
    • HIST-751 Graduate Research Seminar  (6 credit hours)
    • MA thesis
