Admission to the Program

Open to students with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.

Certificate Requirements

15 credit hours with grades of C or better, with at least 6 credit hours at or above 600-level
Capstone Experience: Successful completion of a 3 credit-hour Asian studies research project conducted under the supervision of an Asian studies faculty member. A Substantial Research Paper (SRP) or graduate independent study may be used to fulfill this requirement
Graduate Tool of Research Language Exam
Compliance with all regulations for a certificate (Graduate Academic Regulations 4.11 , 5 , 6 )

Course Requirements

Gateway Requirement (3 credit hours)

Complete 3 credit hours from the following:

HIST-647 Asian Studies (3) (topics)
PHIL-613 Studies in Asian Philosophy (3) (topics)

Concentration (9 credit hours)

Complete 9 credit hours from the following if not taken to fulfill Gateway Requirement, with at least 3 credit hours from a department other than the one in which the student has a primary focus:

HIST-647 Asian Studies (3) (topics)
PHIL-613 Studies in Asian Philosophy (3) (topics)
RELG-670 Islam (3)
RELG-673 Hinduism (3)
SIS-676 Selected Topics in Cross-National Studies (3) (approved topic)

Capstone (3 credit hours)

3 credit hours in an approved capstone project course
