Offered by the Office of Global & Immersive Studies , the Washington Semester Program (WSP) (Summer) provides an opportunity for students to spend a summer in DC, work in a DC internship, and earn academic credit. Established in 1947, WSP has enabled thousands of students from hundreds of domestic and international universities to live, work, and study in Washington, DC with American University (AU).

The WSP motto, “DC is Our Classroom,” highlights the unique value of the program—combining experiential learning from a nationally ranked university with structured and supervised internships at some of DC’s most dynamic institutions.

WSP Summer features:

  • Internship 4 days a week, plus comprehensive internship search support

  • Internship supervision by experienced AU faculty and administrators

  • Career readiness and workplace skill training

  • Choice of three in-person career exploration courses for 3 credit hours each:
    • International Affairs
    • Politics and Law
    • Social Justice
  • Access to premium apartment housing steps from AU’s campus, or if available, AU on-campus or off-campus housing resources
