Mathematics of Information and Security (MS)


Offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics , College of Arts and Sciences .

Admission to the Program


In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for admission, applicants must have an undergraduate degree in mathematics or a related field. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required. Students entering the program without the appropriate background may be expected to take prerequisite courses in CSC-148 Introduction to Computer Science I (4) , MATH-221 Calculus I (4) , MATH-222 Calculus II (4) , MATH-310 Linear Algebra (4) , and STAT-302 Intermediate Statistics (3) , prior to enrollment in the program. Prerequisites may be waived for qualified persons with comparable prior education or experience.

Degree Requirements


  • 30 credit hours of approved graduate work including thesis or nonthesis option requirements
  • Capstone Experience: 
    • Nonthesis Option: MATH-690 Independent Study Project in Mathematics (1-6)  (3 credit hours required) on topic to be chosen in consultation with a faculty member, requiring an oral and written presentation of the research, and 9 credit hours of electives, with all graduate work completed with grades of B or better
    • Thesis Option: MATH-797 Master’s Thesis Research (1-6)  (6 credit hours required) and an oral defense of thesis, and 6 credit hours of electives, with all graduate work completed with grades of B or better
