Offered by the Department of Performing Arts , College of Arts and Sciences . American University’s Audio Technology (MA) prepares students for employment and research in a wide range of audio related fields that range from Music Production to Virtual Reality Audio to Higher Education and Post-Production. Current and past employers include the BBC, Sirius XM, The Brookings Institution, The Library of Congress, Polk Audio, National Geographic, Capitol Recording, Austin City Limits, NPR, Old Dominion University, Howard University, and the SAE Institute, among others.

Admission to the Program

Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for graduate study.

Degree Requirements

30 credit hours of approved graduate work
Capstone Experience: 3 credit hours from one of the following: ATEC-690 Independent Study Project in Audio Technology (1-6) or ATEC-750 Capstone (3)

Course Requirements

Core (12 credit hours)

Note: Students who wish a more foundational studio experience may take ATEC-615 or ATEC-616 , in replacement of ATEC-617 , with advisor approval.

Advanced Studies (6 credit hours)

Complete 6 credit hours from the following:

ATEC-681 Advanced Studies in Audio Production (3) (topics)
ATEC-682 Advanced Studies in Audio Technology (3) (topics)
ATEC-683 Advanced Studies in Audio for Visual Media (3) (topics)
ATEC-684 Advanced Studies in Audio Software Applications (3) (topics)

Electives (9 credit hours)

Complete 9 credit hours from the following, or other courses approved by program director or advisor:

Capstone (3 credit hours)

Complete 3 credit hours from the following:

Note: Students graduating in the Fall semester may complete ATEC-690 (3 credit hours) for the capstone experience. Students graduating in the Spring semester must complete ATEC-750 .
