The Kogod Tax Policy Center promotes independent research and expands knowledge with respect to tax policy, tax planning and tax compliance for small and mid-sized businesses, entrepreneurs and middle income taxpayers. The Center seeks to increase public understanding of the nation’s tax laws, and to spur balanced, productive dialogue on the status of current tax law, the challenges of tax compliance and planning, and the potential impact of tax reform, with a focus on “average” Americans and small and mid-size businesses.

The Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship (VCE) purpose is to build a cross-campus Community of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at American University. Our mission is to cultivate the entrepreneurial mindset by fostering a culture of creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, problem-solving, risk-taking, and resilience among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The VCE uses various experiential learning opportunities (competitions, workshops, panels, and events) to encourage, test, and expand students’ appetite for risk, change, and innovation. These curated engagements are geared toward helping students overcome their fears/uncertainties, moving them out of their comfort zones, learning to take risks, and building their confidence to identify their purpose and live their dreams. Our Business Incubator Program allows students to initiate business models and build their own startup ventures to solve real-world customer problems. People, financial, and other resources are made available by the Veloric Center to support these student-led ventures.

The Market Impact Hub (MIH) is a place for synergistic activities related to research, teaching, generating awareness, creating understanding, and fueling community engagement. Our vision is to equip future generations with the tools they need to serve as pioneers of modern marketing, a practice marked by moral action and loyalty to advancing consumer well-being. Through a wholesome dedication to issues relevant to the institutions that affect our health, happiness, and the value we place on our existence, the MIH can positively impact lives, communities, and society.

The Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) at the Kogod School of Business, American University, is dedicated to positioning Kogod as a global leader in AI education and research. The Institute drives this mission through the integration of AI across curricula, promotion of innovative teaching practices, development of ethical AI usage guidelines, and strategic partnerships with industry and policy leaders. Drawing on a diverse network of affiliated faculty from across American University, IAAI supports high-impact, interdisciplinary research and fosters experiential learning opportunities. It also serves as a hub for business community engagement through speaker series, competitions, and workshops. IAAI aims to empower students, faculty, and staff with cutting-edge AI tools and training, while advancing responsible and transformative AI across academic and professional domains.

Career Development

The Career Development team, located in Kogod 122, equips Kogod students and alumni to become industry-shaping business leaders. The coaches are Gallup Clifton-Strengths certified and partner with students to identify career goals and create a personalized strategy for success. They provide targeted support through market-relevant coaching (resumes, cover letters, interview prep, LinkedIn profiles, salary negotiation, etc.) Students also benefit from recruitment events and networking opportunities with employers and alumni.

The Kogod Talent Network is Kogod’s business-specific recruitment platform where students can apply for jobs and internships, register for events, schedule appointments, and connect with alumni mentors. Further information is available at https://careers.kogod.american.edu/ where students can also access a cutting-edge technology suite including case interview prep, specialized resources for international students, Kogod-specific templates and guides, AI-powered feedback on resumes, LinkedIn, and interview skills, and more.

Center for Professionalism and Communications

No matter the industry, effective professionalism business communication skills are critical for the career readiness and life preparation of all Kogod graduates. In addition to communicating clearly through both written and verbal channels, students need to collaborate as responsible team players, develop their leadership confidence, and distinguish themselves as critical problem-solvers. To support student development in these necessary competencies, the Kogod School of Business runs a dedicated academic support center to instruct, support, and inspire students as they practice and hone these skills.

The Center for Professionalism and Communications equips Kogod students with the real-world communication and professionalism skills they need for career success and advancement. The Center’s trained peer consultants provide face-to-face or virtual tutoring on any written classroom assignment or project and will coach the delivery, content, and research of any team presentation. The Center’s directors deliver tailored instruction as guest lecturers in Kogod courses, set up tutoring check-ins throughout the semester as students work towards project deadlines, and run workshops focused on collaboration, active listening, and storytelling. The Center also provides students the opportunity to earn micro-credentials signifying to employers that they have demonstrated professionalism skills including communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Because the Center offers extensive online content via Canvas, students can access professionalism and communication resources seven days a week, at any hour. Online content includes writing and presentation videos, tip sheets, links to make an appointment, access to LinkedIn Learning resources as well as a comprehensive Style Guide for success in every assignment they encounter throughout their undergraduate or graduate coursework at Kogod. Students can also upload draft assignments for review within 24-hours of an appointment slot to receive robust, asynchronous feedback from a trained business tutor.

Kogod Student Development

At Kogod, the belief is that education should extend beyond the classroom to include experiential learning that enhances students’ intellectual development, leadership ability, communication skills, and professional self-confidence. To that end, activities that allow undergraduates and graduates to learn valuable skills in real world settings are developed and supported. Information on programs as well as student clubs and organizations is available at: kogod.american.edu/students/development/.

Special Programs

Kogod hosts several opportunities for students to build their skills. Examples include:

The Case Competition is the annual signature event hosted by the Kogod School of Business for all graduate and undergraduate students. Case competitions are an excellent opportunity for students to sharpen their communication skills, case analysis, presentation style, and problem-solving techniques. Students work in teams to analyze a business case and present their findings to area business leaders and alumni who serve as judges.

The Annual Leadership Retreat provides Kogod students with meaningful opportunities to work on teams to creatively problem solve and have fun. By participating in teambuilding activities at a local ropes course, students have the opportunity to get to know each other and grow their leadership and collaboration skills.

International Student Development recognizes international students’ unique needs and works to support them through their academic and cultural transitions. We believe in inclusive excellence, which is a value that helps foster appreciation and acceptance for all in our community. This is at the heart of our work, allowing us to offer programs that both support and welcome our international students.

The Educational Enhancement Fund provides Kogod students with the opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities, including business-focused professional conferences or association memberships, case or other competitions, and leadership development activities.

Global Learning Programs

One of Kogod’s core philosophies is that students who have spent time in diverse locations are better prepared to manage and communicate in cross-cultural settings and compete in a global environment. To complete this critical piece of their business education, students can choose from programs of various lengths in more than 100 locations worldwide, including over 30 accredited business programs in nearly 20 countries.

Kogod undergraduate students can pursue a range of global learning opportunities, including semester, summer or year-long study abroad programs, intern abroad programs, and intensive short-term courses focused on a specific economy or region of the world. While abroad, students can earn core or elective credits toward their degree requirements.

Kogod graduate students can choose from several short-term immersive programs, offered in major European business centers as well as emerging economies. Kogod also offers semester abroad opportunities for graduate students. Sustainability Management (MS)  students participate in an integrated international experience, and all students enrolled in the Business Administration (MBA) [Full-Time]  complete a Global Consulting project.

Business Honorary Society

Kogod recognizes the academic, professional, and personal achievement of enrolled students through membership in Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS). BGS is the highest academic recognition for the top 10% of sophomores, juniors, and seniors and the top 20% of graduate students. Eligible students are invited to become members each spring.

Kogod Honors

The Kogod Honors  program is designed for our most talented and ambitious students who desire to use business as a force for meaningful change. Students in the program take Honors designated courses from a selection of our required core courses. These sections have substantively more depth and are designed to develop a professional mindset, creative problem solving, and analytical thinking. Additionally, Honors students participate in extracurricular programming that helps them enhance their leadership, communication, and networking skills.
