Dean’s List
Each academic unit issues a dean’s list of its undergraduate students who receive honors at the end of each semester. The minimum standard for inclusion in the list is a 3.67 grade point average for the semester, earned in a full-time undergraduate degree or nondegree program of not fewer than 15 completed credit hours of which at least 12 hours must be completed for A-F grade credit with a passing grade and during the summer term of not fewer than 12 completed credit hours all of which must be completed for A-F grade credit with a passing grade.
Graduation Honors
Undergraduate graduation honors at American University include Latin Honors, based on cumulative grade point average, and University Honors or AU Honors, based on a combination of honors course requirements, cumulative grade point average, and completion of an honors capstone. To be eligible for graduation honors, students must have completed at least 60 credit hours required for their degree in residence at American University and have achieved the requisite grade point average. Latin Honors, University Honors, and AU Honors are listed in the commencement program and on the student’s diploma and permanent record.
Latin Honors
Latin Honors are calculated and recorded on the transcript and diploma by the Office of the University Registrar upon graduation. To be eligible for Latin Honors, students must complete in residence at least half of the required credit hours needed for a degree at American University (60 of the 120 earned credits) and must achieve the requisite cumulative grade point average as indicated in the chart below:
summa cum laude: 3.91 or higher magna cum laude: 3.81 through 3.90 cum laude: 3.67 through 3.80
University Honors Program
The University Honors Program is a comprehensive program of honors options drawn from the General Education curriculum and departmental course offerings to qualified undergraduate students. The program is characterized by small seminars, individualized attention from faculty, unique access to the resources of Washington, DC, and the special atmosphere of an honors community of committed faculty and students. The program admitted its last freshman class in Fall 2013 and is succeeded by the AU Honors Program.
Transfer students and current students who entered prior to Fall 2014 and have completed fewer than 60 credits are eligible to apply for admission to the Honors program. Self-nominated students may be admitted to the program at the discretion of the honors director if they have achieved a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 for their first 30 earned credits at American University.
Students who entered the program as freshmen must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in designated Honors course work with a grade of B or better in each of the Honors courses and a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above. Students who enter the University Honors Program after the freshman year are required to complete the number of required hours determined by the director of the University Honors Program.
Students who complete the upper-level requirements for University Honors in their major will, upon recommendation by their teaching unit or equivalent, receive University Honors in their major or majors. Alternatively, students who fulfill the upper-level requirements through University Honors seminars or through interdisciplinary course work will graduate with University Honors.
All University Honors students are required to meet with their Honors counselor for advising before registering each semester.

American University Honors Program
Employing team-taught courses, creating living-learning communities that work hands-on with DC institutions, and matching each student with a faculty mentor, the AU Honors Program seeks students from all majors to learn advanced, 21st-century skills and approaches in research, communication, and innovation. This innovative program offers a new approach to liberal arts education by creating courses dedicated to integrative, problem-based learning. Interdisciplinary and team-taught, each of the four courses in the Honors core approaches a single issue from the multiple perspectives afforded by three professors who come from different disciplines. The core offerings change every three years as faculty tackle newly pressing issues. Students then apply their training in interdisciplinary problem solving in a challenge course in which they form teams to pursue a collaborative project and in a senior capstone in their major. The program admitted its first class in Fall 2014.
Interested students must complete an application that includes several essays, and admission is based upon excellence in their high school academic performance and documented potential for high performance as undergraduate students. Enrollment is limited to 45 students, who receive a guaranteed $20,000 scholarship and may be eligible for financial aid. Students entering the program must complete the designated Honors coursework with a grade of B or better in each of the Honors courses and a cumulative GPA of 3.67 or above.
