AMST-335 Refugees, Migration, and Culture (3)

This course introduces students to the field of critical refugee studies. In contrast to portrayals of refugees and migrants as helpless victims, problems to be solved, terrorists, or objects of study, this field treats refugees as producers of knowledge, theory, and culture, and as complex subjects with agency. It therefore centers narratives written by, rather than about, refugees. It brings to light connections between colonialism, militarization, imperialism, and war and displacement.
