COMM-321 Identity, Power, and Misrepresentation (3)

This course explores how systems of power including colonialism, imperialism, Orientalism, capitalism, racism, and heteropatriarchy affect media portrayals of groups with marginalized identities. It looks at why women are always fighting, crying, and competing for a man on reality television; why there is scarce coverage of poverty in the news media; and why people of color are increasingly bypassing traditional media and turning to social media to tell their stories.
