GERM-344 Nietzsche, Literature, and the Arts (3) Friedrich Nietzsche is known as a philosopher, but he was also a theorist of the arts, a cultural critic, an essayist, a writer of narrative prose, a poet, and even a minor musician. He counts as one of the greatest stylists in the German language and one of the most literary and artistic thinkers in Western history. This course uses the work of Nietzsche to explore different areas of creative and aesthetic activity within a broad historical and cultural context. Structured around the writings of Nietzsche, the course branches out in different directions to study a variety writers, thinkers and artists whose work lends itself to thought-provoking juxtapositions with Nietzsche’s texts.
