WGSS-345 Queer South Asian Diasporas (3)

Who counts as queer diaspora? What is the use of approaching gender and sexuality studies from a term as ambiguous as South Asia? This course integrates concepts of queer theory with a particular focus on queer of color critique. It considers queer texts through the lens of diaspora. As it considers the formation and emergence of queer South Asian diasporas with a focus outside the United States, the class also considers the term queer in relation to liberal concepts of freedom and visibility; carcerality and nationalism; and the ways in which queer might fail as a useful term within South Asian identity politics.
