PME-501 Qualitative Methods in Project Monitoring and Evaluation

This course teaches the skills necessary to carry out qualitative data collection methods in of monitoring and evaluation (M&E). The course analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, and uses of qualitative data to help students assess when they would use qualitative methods and why. Students learn how to use qualitative data collection techniques including observation, participant observation, participatory methods, and open-ended, semi-structured and focus group interviews. Coursework includes practical assignments where students conduct participant observation and interviews with a nonprofit, social change, or development organization in their local community.
