Explores the Enlightenment in a pan-European and transatlantic context as an intellectual and cultural movement that engaged a growing reading public through publications and forums of intellectual sociality. Students become familiar with canonic figures such as Voltaire and Adam Smith, as well as lesser known authors, including women and Caribbean slaveholders. Meets with HIST-486 . Usually offered alternate springs.
