Introduction to basic concepts of linguistics and their application to the Spanish language: phonology, morphology, syntax, etymology. Brief survey of the historical development of the Spanish language. Dialects of Spanish and other languages spoken in the Hispanic world. Introduction to a contrastive analysis of English and Spanish. Meets with SPAN-461. Usually offered every fall.
