The School of Education (SOE) is a transformative leader in improving educational outcomes from birth through adulthood. The SOE mission– to create knowledge and prepare students to transform societies through education– guides the School’s programming and outreach efforts. The vision of the School is to be locally, nationally, and globally recognized for making a meaningful impact in the field of education through innovative teaching, research and service. SOE impact is achieved through rigorous scholarship; advocating for equitable and inclusive learning environments; advancing social justice; preparing effective and highly skilled educators; providing leadership in public-policy arenas; and collaborating with local, national, and global communities and organizations. SOE is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and locally accredited by Washington DC’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).
The SOE has four distinct areas of study: a) teacher education, b) special education, c) education policy and leadership, and d) international/global education. All undergraduate and graduate programs are grounded in the study of human development, learning science and theory, and sustained clinical practice. Located in close proximity to numerous urban and suburban school districts and education policy and practice organizations, the School has longstanding partnerships which provide internships and other experiential opportunities for students. In addition, SOE faculty and students engage in high-quality and equity-oriented research, program evaluation and professional learning that impacts local, regional, national and global communities. Online, on-campus, and hybrid degree and certificate programs can be completed on a full or part-time basis.
SOE is home to the Institute for Innovation in Education and the Center for Postsecondary Readiness and Success, which work with SOE faculty and affiliated researchers to conduct research, develop programs and facilitate projects in schools and communities dedicated to educational equity, high quality educator preparation, and evaluating programs and strategies for increasing college and career access for underserved populations.
