American University Gap Program

Offered by the Office of Global & Immersive Studies , the  American University Gap Program offers students a one or two semester Washington, DC immersion experience.

There are two iterations of the American University Gap Program:

  1. The AU Gap Program is designed for students who have finished high school and are seeking academic enrichment before formally starting college. Students earn 7 credit hours per semester from American University for an internship experience (3 days/week Mentored Field Practicum ) and a 100-level classroom seminar (1 day/week).
  2. The Gap Collegiate Program is designed for current college students who otherwise are taking a temporary leave from their bachelor’s degree program. Students earn 8 credit hours per semester from American University for an internship experience (3 days/week Mentored Field Practicum), and a 400-level classroom seminar (1 day/week) with our Washington Semester Program  students.

Seminar classes are interactive sessions featuring guest speakers and site visits. The internship is guided by an AU professor who meets regularly with students to discuss professional development topics related to the internship experience.

All Gap Program students have the option to take an additional 3-credit elective at American University for a per-credit fee.
