Honors in Sociology

Available through the Department of Sociology , College of Arts and Sciences , the Honors in Sociology program enhances the undergraduate research experience in the discipline as students engage in core activities of the field under the guidance of department faculty.

Admission to the Program
Students should apply during the spring of their sophomore year (by April 1) and no later than the fall of their junior year (by October 15).
Students seeking admission to the Honors in Sociology program must have a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA, a minimum 3.67 major GPA, completed a 100-level Sociology course with grade of A- or better, and completed a 200-level or 300-level course with grade of A- or better. Applicants must also meet with two or more members of the full-time faculty to discuss their ideas for their capstone research and prepare a short essay that indicates: their capacity for thinking sociologically and applying sociological principles; and a demonstrable fit between student research interests and ongoing faculty research.
Program Requirements
- 12 credit hours in Honors in Sociology coursework
- Capstone Experience: substantial scholarly research project in the context of SOCY-492 Major Seminar in Sociology (3) and defense of the project before relevant Sociology faculty
- Minimum 3.67 major GPA in Sociology (BA)
