Social Responsibility (Undergraduate Certificate)

Offered by the College of Arts and Sciences , Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars are required to complete this 14-credit, cohort-based, four-year certificate within four years. By pursuing multidisciplinary approaches to moral leadership, the certificate is designed to create socially-responsible leaders who are critical thinkers and engaged activists in the tradition of the American abolitionist and social reformer Frederick Douglass.

Admission to the Program
New freshmen students are admitted through the university’s Admissions Office. Due to the intensive cohort-based nature of the program, it is not possible to transfer into the certificate program.
Certificate Requirements
- 14 credits of approved coursework with grades of C or better. Grades of C- or D are not accepted toward the fulfillment of certificate requirements, although these grades will be included in the calculation of the GPA. Students must maintain a minimum 3.20 GPA in certificate courses in order to be awarded a certificate. Students in certificate programs must take a minimum of 6 credit hours during each 12-month period and complete the certificate in four years. International students must enroll in 9 credit hours each semester (except for summer). A maximum of 3 credit hours earned at an accredited college or university may be applied toward the certificate as transfer credit
Moral Leadership (3 credit hours)
Complete 3 credit hours from the following, or other approved courses: Engaged Activists (3 credit hours)
Complete 3 credit hours from the following, or other approved courses: Institutional Structures and Responsibility (3 credit hours)
Complete 3 credit hours from the following, or other approved courses: Research Module (1 credit hour)
