The School of Education (SOE) offers programs that prepare students to become P-12 teachers, educational leaders at every level, and researchers for careers in early childhood settings, schools, colleges and universities, government agencies, and community and professional organizations in the U.S. and abroad. The academic programs take advantage of the dynamic location in DC to connect students with professionals in a large array of organizations that complement their programs of study. Degree and certificate programs can be completed on a full or part-time basis with hands-on experience gained through internships, practica, community service, and related research work.

The SOE faculty and programs demonstrate a commitment to the interrelated principles of community, inclusion, diversity, equity, excellence and the advancement of knowledge about the nature, function, and practice of education. Faculty conduct a wide range of cutting edge research on the most pressing issues of our time in P-12 teacher education, special education, bilingual education, curriculum and instruction, higher education, and education policy and leadership in domestic, global and comparative contexts. Themes common in faculty research and programs include meeting the needs of special learners, critical literacy, research-informed policy development, educational neuroscience, linguistics, as well as domestic and international formal and non-formal education. SOE is home to the Institute for Innovation in Education, which works with SOE faculty and affiliated researchers to develop programs and projects in schools and communities dedicated to educational equity through increasing educational opportunity and access. Students benefit from working with a highly qualified and dedicated faculty in small classes, and from opportunities to participate in ongoing faculty research aimed at influencing educational policy and practice.
